FMAT students discover a love of reading thanks to funding boost

FMAT reading funding boost: Students across Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust are set to benefit from a significant investment in reading after each of the Trust’s four academies received more than £1,000 to spend on new books and reading materials.

The funding forms part of the Department for Education’s £5 million investment to support secondary schools during the National Year of Reading 2026, helping schools to expand and refresh their library collections.

The announcement comes at a crucial time. Recent research from the National Literacy Trust found that reading enjoyment among children and young people has fallen to its lowest level in two decades, with just one in three young people saying they enjoy reading in their free time.

FMAT’s English and Literacy Lead, Michelle Rabicano, said it is an incredibly important investment in young people.

“Reading for pleasure is one of the strongest indicators of future academic success, but it also helps students develop confidence, curiosity and a greater understanding of the world around them.”

Research consistently demonstrates the impact of reading for pleasure on educational outcomes. Studies have shown that young people who read regularly are more likely to develop stronger vocabulary, comprehension and writing skills, with benefits extending into later life and across a range of subjects.

However, the benefits reach far beyond academic achievement.

“Reading builds empathy and understanding of other people, cultures and ways of life,” Michelle said.

“Researchers have found that reading literary fiction can improve our ability to understand other people’s perspectives. It supports wellbeing too. For many young people, reading provides a genuine source of relaxation and escape at a time when both are in short supply.”

The FMAT reading funding boost is also expected to support the Trust’s ongoing work to improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

Michelle said: “One of the most encouraging aspects of the research is that the positive impact of reading for pleasure is seen regardless of a child’s background.

“That means helping more students find books they love is one of the most powerful things we can do to broaden opportunities and remove barriers to success.”
