Erdington students level up their skills at gaming industry careers workshop

Erdington gaming careers workshop: Students from Erdington Academy had the chance to explore their dream job at a recent careers event focused on the gaming industry.

The workshop was run by the charity Into Games, which was set up to develop talent as early as possible and make a career in this famously competitive sector more accessible to young people.

Year 8 students learned how to build game concepts and had the chance to meet employers and industry experts, who visited the school on Tuesday 14 April.

Careers Advisor Mr Hassnain said: “With so many young people dreaming of working in the gaming industry, but only a small number of entry‑level roles available, this workshop gave our students a valuable head start in understanding how to turn their passion into a career.

“By the end of the day, students showed an increased awareness of both technical skills, such as programming, and the collaborative nature of the industry.

“They began to understand the complexity of game development, and the session really encouraged creativity and independent learning.”

All students had the chance to start developing their first game concept during the workshop, with one student taking inspiration from his favourite games at home, and another commenting that “it isn’t as simple as it seems”.

Others said it was helpful to learn about the different roles within the industry and the basics of programming and game mechanics.
