Fairfax Academy rugby partnership aims to develop future professional stars

Fairfax Academy rugby partnership: A Sutton Coldfield school with a proud rugby history is kicking off an exciting new era – after signing an agreement with a professional club to develop the next generation of star players.

Fairfax Academy, which is part of the ambitious Fairfax Multi Academy Trust, has launched an official partnership with Coventry Rugby Academy, which nurtures young athletes through high-performance coaching, holistic development, and a clear pathway to the professional game  at Coventry Rugby Club.

The partnership marks Fairfax as one of just four schools across Birmingham selected to join the prestigious Coventry Rugby Academy network — a testament to the school’s commitment to excellence, opportunity, and community sport.

From September, the programme will provide a structured pathway for students to develop their skills both on and off the pitch, with the long-term goal of offering opportunities for talented players to represent both Coventry Rugby and Fairfax Academy.

Fairfax Academy rugby partnership will also include girls

In its first year, the programme will be open to boys, with girls’ rugby provision being added from Year 2 onwards — reflecting Fairfax’s commitment to inclusivity and growing the game for all.

The partnership will also strengthen links with Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club, utilising its outstanding facilities and coaching expertise. In the near future, Sutton coaches will work directly with Fairfax students, ensuring a natural progression from school to club rugby.

Principal Sean Castle said: “This partnership cements Fairfax’s position as a centre of rugby excellence.

“We’re delighted to be working alongside Coventry Rugby Academy to offer our students a clear and exciting pathway — from grassroots to elite level — while continuing to celebrate our proud history and tradition in the sport.”

The collaboration marks an exciting new era for Fairfax Sixth Form — one that combines tradition, opportunity, and ambition in equal measure.

Fairfax’s internal students will continue to be prioritised for Sixth Form places, with a dedicated allocation available through the Coventry Academy pathway. Students will benefit from enhanced training, access to professional coaching, and opportunities to play in both first and second teams, while Year 11 seniors will proudly represent Fairfax in competitive school leagues.
