In a launch ceremony attended by staff, students and VIPs, Sutton Coldfield MP Sir Andrew Mitchell cut the ribbon to open the revamped learning space for all students to enjoy.

The library was remodelled over the summer holidays at the school, which is part of the ambitious Fairfax Multi Academy Trust (FMAT).

The star feature of the new library are new university-style glass study pods, which give students the privacy and space they need to study alone or in groups.

Sir Andrew said: “It was delighted to be asked to open Fairfax’s new library, which is clearly a very well-equipped and designed space that will give students access to new ways of learning.

“Libraries have been a hot topic in Sutton Coldfield recently, with our public libraries under threat of closure, so it was wonderful to be see real investment in this refurbished facility at Fairfax.

“I absolutely believe books and libraries are an essential cornerstone of education, and it’s wonderful to see Fairfax students embracing the use of theirs.

“Along with all the other brilliant schools in the Royal Town, I regularly visit Fairfax, and I am always impressed at the diligence and kindness of both staff and students. The school works hard to deliver the best possible resources for students, and this newly-refurbished library is a valuable addition.”

Simon Jones said: “At FMAT we believe it’s absolutely essential for students to have access to the best learning spaces, equipped for studying in the modern age.

“Fairfax’s new library is the perfect blend of traditional and modern resources, with both communal and private spaces for students to thrive in their self-driven education.”

Fairfax’s Principal Sean Castle said: “We are very grateful to Sir Andrew for joining us to celebrate the new library, which the students are already enthusiastically using.

“We want them to feel empowered to learn in a space that accommodates their needs and encourages them to work both independently and collaboratively.

“It’s been a really important investment for our school, and we’re delighted to officially open its doors.”
