PLANTSBROOK SCHOOL UNIVERSITY MENTORS INSPIRE PUPILS

Plantsbrook School University mentors are inspiring students by providing valuable advice in a pioneering mentoring scheme.

Birmingham City University undergraduates Jasmeen Kaur and Maria Peranzi visit the Upper Holland Road School each week, as part of the Aimhigher West Midlands scheme, a partnership of universities supporting students to make informed decisions about their future educational and career choices.

Plantsbrook Careers Advisor Sarah Dullea said: “The Plantsbrook School University mentors spend an hour with each student, giving them individual mentoring sessions to help raise aspirations.

“The students have responded really well to the scheme – they get a newfound interest in learning, the importance at getting their GCSEs and being engaged in school.

“The mentors’ advice can cover improved knowledge on colleges, universities, apprenticeships, employment and how to study and revise.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in this mentoring scheme, especially the mentors who give up their time each week to pass on their knowledge.”
– Jason farr, headteacher

“I think it really helps that our students are getting advice and information on their Post 16 choices from someone that isn’t that much older than they are and has gone through the same experience recently.”

Plantsbrook School University mentors helps students with special educational needs

Currently, Plantsbrook students with special educational needs are also getting support from the mentors.

Mr Dullea added: “It’s not a compulsory scheme, and the students can leave at any time they want, but the fact that they all continue on the programme every week is a testament to how valuable the advice is.”

Maria said: “It’s a very rewarding thing to do, and the students seem to get a great deal out of the mentoring sessions.”

Headteacher Jason Farr said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved in this mentoring scheme, especially the mentors who give up their time each week to pass on their knowledge.”
