MP praises John Willmott litter picking students

MP praises John Willmott students – Community-minded pupils who have joined volunteers from Sutton’s biggest litter picking group have won praise from the town’s Member of Parliament.

Year 8 students at John Willmott, which is part of the respected Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, have been following the lead of Sutton Coldfield Litter Action Group (SCLAG) to organise litter picks in Falcon Lodge.

Last week Sutton MP Andrew Mitchell visited the school to meet the litter pickers to find out about how they are contributing the community and answer their questions about what it’s like to be an MP.

MP praises John Willmott pupils

Mr Mitchell said: “It’s always great to visit John Willmott and find it what the students there are up to.

“The school leads the way when it comes to enrichment for students, and I’m always impressed by the different extra-curricular activities that are organised on top of the brilliant teaching at the school.

“By choosing to take up the challenge of litter picking in Falcon Lodge, the pupils have shown a level of maturity and a sense of community spirit which reflects very well on them and the school.”

Headteacher Tracey Peters said: “It was great to welcome Andrew Mitchell back to John Willmott and he was very interested to hear about the students’ efforts in organising litter picks in nearby Falcon Lodge.

“Every other Wednesday afternoon is given over to ‘Enrichment’ at John Willmott, as a response to students missing out on not only extra curricular activities but also social and environmental pursuits over the last year.

“It was the students’ idea to get involved in litter picking, and Mr Mitchell was very impressed by their efforts.”
