Erdington Academy gardening club celebrates winning display at BBC Gardeners’ World

Erdington Academy gardening club victory: A beautifully crafted wheelbarrow display, bursting with the ingredients for a classic afternoon tea, has earned Erdington Academy students first place in this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live schools competition.

The challenge invited students to transform a simple wheelbarrow into a vibrant, meal‑inspired garden, growing as many ingredients as possible from seed.

The students from Years 7 to 10 are part of the Erdington Academy gardening club and returned to the show at the NEC to pick up their award for the secondary school category last week.

The young gardeners got to speak about their wheelbarrow at the NEC.

Assistant Principal Mr Halstead, who runs the gardening club, said their hard work was clear to see.

“The wheelbarrow looked stunning, full of colour and life, and reflected the commitment the students had shown throughout the project.

“Judges were highly complimentary, recognising not only the quality of the display but also the effort, care, and perseverance behind it.”

To stand out from the competition, the club chose a unique twist on the brief: an afternoon‑tea‑themed wheelbarrow. Students grew chamomile, mint, lemongrass and strawberries, as well as edible borage, marigolds and pansies.

Mr Halstead said: “A classic afternoon tea is all about different tastes and aromas, from finger sandwiches to warm scones with jam and miniature cakes. We wanted our wheelbarrow to capture a slice of that traditional experience.”

Students collected their award on stage at the NEC, before meeting gardening experts and presenters. They spoke proudly about representing Erdington Academy at such a prestigious national event.

Mr Halstead added: “Being able to showcase their work beyond the school community was a significant achievement and a moment they will remember with pride.”

The gardening club remains a popular after‑school activity, offering students hands‑on learning in a creative, supportive environment.

Through projects like this, students develop confidence, environmental awareness, teamwork skills and improved wellbeing.
