HILL WEST SCHOOL ACTIVITY SEES PUPILS SOLVE PYRAMIDS RIDDLE

A Hill West School activity saw youngsters try to solve one of history’s mysteries when they combined three different subjects to investigate how the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids.

Year 3 children at Hill West Primary School, which is part of the respected Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, took part in a fun activity that linked History, DT and Science, to try to work out how the Egyptians moved heavy objects without modern machinery.

For the Hill West School activity, teacher Kelly Bailey challenged the children to move some heavy slabs safely from one place to another over a rough surface, using only materials provided by Assistant Building Site Supervisor Steve Carroll.

So, they set about moving the slabs with planks, wheels, rope, metal frames, wooden pillars, strong cardboard tubes and pallets.

Ms Bailey said: “The children really enjoyed the challenge that was set for them and worked out how to most efficiently move the heavy slabs, using strong cardboard tubing to reproduce the ancient roller method of transport.

“They worked together as a team to develop their ideas and then repositioned the rollers seamlessly to transport the slab from one side of the field to another.”

“This was a fantastic activity that mixed so many different aspects of education and development, from key subjects such as science and history to skills like problem solving and teamwork. And they really enjoyed it too!”
