Shrubbery School ‘forest school’ provides fresh air and fresh ideas for pupils

Shrubbery School ‘forest school’ – Mother Nature is providing a new classroom for pupils at a Sutton independent school – after it opened the town’s first ‘forest school’ area.

The Shrubbery School, in Walmley, is investing in the new outdoor learning area, which will allow students to learn in the fresh air and be inspired by their natural surroundings.

Headteacher Amanda Lees said: “The children love the idea of learning outside and we’re really lucky here to have a wonderful site with lots of green space.

“The idea of forest schools is getting more and more popular, as a way of complimenting classroom learning, and we’ve visited other sites to see how it’s done.

“Now we’re really excited as we think this is the first one in Sutton.

“It’s something that inspires the children – it helps them engage with learning in a new way by exciting all of their senses, while also helping them develop a greater appreciation of nature, wildlife and the environment. And, of course, it’s great fun!”

Shrubbery School ‘forest school’ one of many new investments

The forest school is one of a number of major investments at the school since new owners took charge in the summer, including IT equipment and major building work.
