PLANTSBROOK SCHOOL NETBALL TEAM ARE THE QUEENS OF SUTTON’S COURTS

Plantsbrook School netball team are having a ball after being crowned champions at four different netball tournaments.

The school’s netballers have already been named the Sutton school champions at sixth form and year 7, 8 and 10 levels, with the Year 8 team going on to win the Birmingham-wide crown too.

Now the school is hoping their remaining teams will also go on to achieve glory.

Coach Kelly Mclaughlin said: “We’re really proud of what the girls on the Plantsbrook School netball team have achieved so far, and there’s plenty of opportunities to come to win more.

“Sutton is a real netball area with some great clubs, and we’re lucky that a number of our girls also play in clubs like Sutton Town, Sutton Royals and Parkside outside of school.

“One of our 12-year-olds has even got into under 17s squad of Seven Stars, a Netball Superleague team based in Worcester, which is a real achievement.”

Mrs Mclaughlin says the school’s new sports hall and outdoor facilities have helped boost confidence and pride in the young players, who she says learn discipline from taking their training seriously.

“It’s also great that we have such a strong, large netball set up here, because the younger girls get to mix with older ones, which means they have some one to look up to, in terms of the very talented netballers we have. It’s a very positive influence on them,”

Plantsbrook School netball team – for boys?

Now even the boys are getting the netball bug at Plantsbrook.

“Our GCSE boys, in years 9, 10,and 11, didn’t really like the idea of playing netball,” Mrs Mclaughlin said, “but it’s such a disciplined sport, in terms of it being a very fast-moving game with lots of rules, that they’re taking to it.

“They’ve got the potential to be very good netballers, and there are some male leagues in Birmingham they could get involved in.”
