In the Fairfax Eisteddfod 2019 students at the Sutton Coldfield school celebrated all things British in a colourful and patriotic two-night festival of arts and culture.
The annual Eisteddfod arts festival is a highlight of the calendar at Fairfax School, in Fairfax Road, with the four houses of Coventry, Kenilworth, Stratford and Warwick competing for awards in categories as diverse as dance and flower arranging.
And last week the pupils took to the stage over two nights for the Fairfax Eisteddfod 2019 to present songs, dance routines, plays and sketches on this year’s theme of the ‘Best of British’.
Piers Morgan and Boris Johnson were two of the characters to raise a laugh at Fairfax Eisteddfod 2019.
That meant students portraying everyone from Boris Johnson to Jeremy Kyle, and rocking out to hits by UK stars.
Non-performance categories included stamp designing and a creative writing contest in which youngsters had to write about their choice for the greatest ever Briton.
In the photography category, students were challenged to take a selfie at a national landmark, while young cooks had to create a Great British Bake-off style ‘show stopper’ for the food section.
Fairfax’s Eisteddfod has been a key part of life at the school for decades, generating a passionate rivalry between classmates who hope to break up for Christmas safe in the knowledge that their house has been awarded the overall cup by the panel of judges.

And in Fairfax Eisteddfod 2019, it was Kenilworth who lifted the trophy – with its members rushing the stage in celebration as the result was announced by Head of Academy Deborah Bunn.
“This year’s Eisteddfod was absolutely brilliant and we are so proud of everyone who took part,” Mrs Bunn said.
“The Eisteddfod is probably Fairfax’s greatest tradition – it really brings the school together every year. The students are really supportive of each other but also passionate about winning.
“I’d like to congratulate Kenilworth for being awarded the overall trophy, and thank everyone who made the Eisteddfod happen, from the students themselves to the staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes and the parents who added to the incredible atmosphere over the two nights.
“The Eisteddfod always shows Fairfax at its very best, and this year it was simply fantastic.”
